In acupuncture medicine, it is understood that the liver provides the generating energy for the heart. This “generating energy” refers to the essential life force that activates and sustains the function of an organ. In simpler terms, it is the base energy that supports the activity of that organ.
To make this relatable: the liver acts like a mother to the heart. Just as a mother nourishes and protects her child, the liver supports, strengthens, and energizes the heart, enabling it to function smoothly and healthily.
So, if we want our heart to function with vitality and remain disease-free, the first thing we need to ensure is that the liver is strong and healthy. Only a healthy liver can support the heart effectively. That’s the first key point. The second is this: in order for the liver to remain healthy and do its job, we must take care of its energy. Just like a mother needs to be in good health to care for her child, our liver needs to be in balance to protect the heart.
Hence, maintaining the strength of the liver is like building a protective shield around the heart. If the liver is taken care of, there is far less risk of developing heart-related conditions like chest pain, heart attacks, or extreme fluctuations in blood pressure. In fact, when such issues do arise, one possible underlying cause is often a weak or overburdened liver.
So, how can we protect and preserve the liver’s energy?
The most essential lifestyle habit is to get proper sleep at night. Without sound, timely sleep, even the best treatments or healthy habits won’t be enough to support the liver’s function. Unfortunately, today it’s common for people to eat dinner late at night, spend hours on phones and TV, and stay up past midnight due to work or entertainment. This lifestyle error is a major contributor to heart disease and other health issues.
We must rediscover the value of restful sleep—not just for physical recovery, but also for emotional balance and inner healing. Make sleep a priority. Let’s decide to finish our daily activities by 9 p.m. and go to bed on time. This is a simple but powerful step toward better health.
Some might say, “But I can’t fall asleep that early.” The answer? Prepare your mind and body for sleep. Create a peaceful, dark environment. Avoid stimulation. Lie down calmly with a sincere desire to sleep, and simply wait. Sleep is not just rest—it is a sacred blessing, a divine grace. When we receive it with gratitude and stillness, it will naturally come to us.
If we fail to value sleep, if we don’t welcome it with awareness and openness, what we experience may only be drowsiness—not the deep healing of true sleep. Sleep is a divine moment where the soul returns with the grace of having touched the Divine. It is not to be taken lightly or ignored.
In essence: if we want to be protected from heart ailments, we need to maintain the health of the liver. And to keep the liver healthy, the very first step is disciplined and timely sleep.
Let’s also consider another vital point. Taking chemical-based medicines frequently can seriously weaken the liver. One of the liver’s key responsibilities is to detoxify harmful substances and maintain the purity of the body. But when we overload it with chemicals—from pills or processed, preserved foods—it has to work overtime just to cleanse the body. This can drain its energy and disturb its connection with the heart.
That’s why we should avoid unnecessary medications, especially for minor ailments like fever, cold, or headaches. These are often signs that the body is naturally eliminating toxins. When this happens, instead of interfering with the process, we need to respond with patience and trust.
Remember, we created those toxins ourselves—through poor diet and lifestyle. So when the body tries to clean them out, it is our responsibility to cooperate with patience. And patience, when combined with right understanding, is a powerful healing medicine in itself. It can heal any illness, any suffering.
If needed, turn to natural healing systems like acupuncture, Siddha medicine, or other holistic methods. These offer powerful, side-effect-free solutions—especially for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, and thyroid disorders that often lead to lifelong medication dependency.
Finally, let’s remember this: no disease appears overnight. Chronic illness is not caused by a single mistake, but by the accumulation of many small lifestyle errors over time. If we want to be truly healthy, we must pay attention to every detail of our daily life—with awareness, with discipline, and with faith.
Let today be the beginning of that journey toward health. May the Divine strengthen us, guide us, and protect us.
